lol this brings me way back, to Rosseau. He thought pre-civilized man (which he fantasized as man alone in nature) was happy, because he could truly love himself (amour de soi). But as soon as he was amongst other humans, in “civilization,” he internalized their gaze and could only love himself through how they saw him (amour propre). What makes us content should make us content, right? But I know I’m so often swayed by what I think people might think about what I think makes me content, and then question whether it *should* make me content. lol And Rosseau was writing in the 1700s! Imagine what he would think about social media!
